Old regulators constructed across the Nallar and Adappar in Thalai Gnayiru. The Public Works Department has now planned to construct new regulators at another places far beyond the village.

Farmers of Thalaignayiru village who have been demanding shift in the site for the construction of regulators in their village have planned to stage road roko next week, urging the Public Works Department and the district administration to relocate the regulators.

According to Somu. Ilango, Coordinator of the Agitation Committee, the Asia Development Bank-funded project for ₹ 950 crore envisages construction of two regulators.

The Public Works Department had planned to construct the regulators on the western side of the village while the farmers want them on the eastern side.

“It is only on the eastern side that the brackish water enters the Thalaignayiru village and hence our suggestion to construct the regulator on the eastern part of our village,” he said.

Meanwhile, the villagers have planned to launch a ‘road roko’ by next week, if the district administration and the Public Works Department did not alter the proposal.

“Thalaignayiru receives maximum showers during monsoon.

The regulator, if constructed on the eastern side, will not only prevent sea water from entering into Kallimedu village but also help store the storm water and thereby enhance the groundwater table,” said Paul. V. Muruganandam and S. Prabakaran, both members of the Committee.
