Chettikulam complex shields farmers from exploitation by middlemen

Trading of shallots through open auction at the newly established marketing complex at Chettikulam near here has picked up pace providing immense benefit to onion growers and traders of the district.

Ever since the exclusive marketing complex for small onions commenced operations in the middle of July this year, the quantity of onions sold through open auction has witnessed a steady increase. Introduction of auction offers protection to farmers from exploitation by middlemen. Over 122 metric tonnes of small onions were sold through auctions last one month. The total value of the sale was over Rs.14.73 lakh. Traders from Dindigul, Theni, Oddanchathiram and Koyambedu take part .
