All five persons travelling in a car died after their vehicle and a State Express Transport Corporation bus collided head-on near Thirumayam in Pudukottai district on Thursday night.
Police gave the names of the victims as V. Ganesan (24), S. Sakthivel (27), G. Bhaskar (29), A. Senthamizhselvan (26) and K. Balachandran (26). Barring the car driver Sakthivel, the rest were all from Pudukottai district.
While the car was proceeding towards Madurai from Pudukottai, the SETC was bound for Chennai from Devakottai.
Police sources said some liquor bottles were found inside the car which was completely smashed in the impact of the collision.
Pudukottai Superintendent of Police J. Loganathan inspected the accident spot and conducted inquiries. The Thirumayam police have registered a case.
In another fatal accident in the early hours of Friday, a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus rammed a stationary lorry at Malaikudipatti village in Pudukottai district causing the death of two persons.
The bus was on its way to Kumbakonam from Madurai when the vehicle dashed against the stationary lorry from behind and overturned. Bus conductor Subramanian (40) and passenger Rajamanickam (55) died in the accident. About 20 passengers sustained injuries. The Thirumayam police have registered a case.
