Following the murder of a Scheduled Caste youth near Manapparai during a temple festival a few days ago, the Assistant Director of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Chennai, P. Ramasamy conducted an enquiry regarding the crime and the action taken by the police on Thursday.

Accompanied by police and revenue officials, Mr. Ramasamy inspected the scene of crime where the murder had occurred in the late hours on Sunday.

He also went to the Manapparai police station to ascertain the action taken by the police and whether relevant sections had been booked in connection with the murder. He also ascertained whether the victim relief fund had been given to the parents of the deceased.

Police sources said Mr. Ramasamy met the parents of the victim residing in Manapparai and enquired about the murder with them.

Twenty-year-old P. Muthukumar was murdered and three of his associates were injured after they were attacked by a group while they were returning home after attending a Mariamman temple festival.

The Manapparai police booked a case under IPC sections including 302 (murder) and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Four youths were arrested by the police including a person by name Arun Pandian who reportedly had a tiff with Muthukumar some time ago. Pickets were posted in and around Manapparai as a precautionary step to maintain order as a sequel to the murder.

The parents refused to take possession of the body after completion of postmortem formalities at Manapparai Government Hospital as they sought a re-post mortem at the Tiruchi Government Hospital. The sources said the parents accepted the body on Thursday.
