Tiruchi Corporation has planned to distribute saplings free of cost to city residents interested in raising them in their households. Residents who nurture the saplings well will be rewarded with prizes.
The initiative is part of the civic body’s attempts to increase the green cover in the city. The corporation has called upon residents to convey their interest and requirement in writing either to its main office or the four zonal offices.
The requests could also be mailed to commr.trichy@tn.gov.in, Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani told The Hindu .
Mr.Thandapani said corporation employees have been instructed to ascertain the requirements of residents during field visits in their jurisdictional areas.
“We will procure the saplings from the forest department and supply to the residents,” he said. Residents in groups can also get the free saplings if they are prepared to raise and maintain them in their colonies.
The corporation has invited qualified resource persons to voluntarily join the civic body’s efforts in improving civic services.
Retired government servants, educationists and others could help the corporation in areas such as increasing revenue, maintenance of parks, reducing use of plastics, education, prevention of drinking water pilferage, and civic management. Those interested could register themselves by sending in their details to commr.trichy@tn.gov.in
Referring to the corporation move to invite private participation in the city beautification efforts, Mr.Thandapani said works were currently underway in improving traffic islands at seven places in the city.
