Sixty newly-appointed Assistant Engineers of Public Works Department’s Water Resources Organisation are undergoing induction training at the Irrigation Management Training Institute (IMTI) in Thuvakkudi.
The three-week programme was inaugurated on Monday by Chief Engineer, PWD-Water Resources Department, Tiruchi Region, Painthamilselvan, in the presence of IMTI Director Rajeshwari. Technical sessions commenced with a presentation on IMTI’s role as the nodal institute for irrigation management.
Over the last two days, professors and research associates at IMTI handled sessions on the organisational structure of PWD, water scenario in India and Tamil Nadu, agricultural development in the State , national and State water policies and basin-level planning concepts, status of groundwater, irrigation systems, irrigation efficiency, and other related areas.
Field visits
The orientation programme would be interspersed with field visits. On Thursday, the trainees would visit Kallanai and irrigation structures in Pattukottai. Next week, they would go on field visits to upper anicut, Mayanur barrage, and reservoirs including those at Mettur and Bhavanisagar, official sources said.
By the end of the programme, the new engineers appointed through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission would gain insights into eviction of encroachments, legal aspects of water resources, software applications in surface and groundwater, water saving techniques, irrigation water management, conflict resolutions in water management ands so on.
