Cadre of Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) took out a cycle rally in the city to press for total prohibition and other demands. They demanded effective steps for protecting environment, natural resources, and ground water level. Carrying placards and banners explaining the dangers of consuming liquor, they pleaded the government to bring in total prohibition in the State.

The pamphlets said that water table was fast depleting in the State. Since the State does not have any perennial rivers, the indiscriminate digging of bore wells and overexploitation of ground water for commercial purposes have taken a huge toll on the State’s water resources. Due to indiscriminate mining, natural resources have become scarce in the State. The indiscriminate mining of sand has badly hit the river beds. The other natural resources such as granite, manganese, and stone gravel are being exploited to a big extent in the State and effective steps should be taken to put an end to this menace. K.Sankar, president of the urban district unit of the Puthiya Tamizhagam, led the cycle rally, which was flagged off from near the Anna Statue in Chinthamani. The participants pedalled through Teppakulam, Singarathope and dispersed near Poompuhar. The rural district unit of the party took out rallies at Manapparai, Vaiyappatti, Manachanallur, and Lalgudi.
