The need for protection of heritage sites in the district was underlined by speakers at a seminar on ‘Protection of heritage sites' organised jointly under the auspices of the Tourism Department and EVR Periyar College here on Monday, as part of observance of ‘World Tourism Day'.

They said the district in general and the city in particular were noted for a large number of heritage sites which reflected the culture of the hoary past and acted as a mirror of the architectural acumen of historical rulers. T.Soundiah, Collector, who inaugurated the seminar, said the architecture of temples in Srirangam, Tiruvanaikovil and the Rockfort in the city were still a challenge to the engineers.

These temples, by virtue of their heritage value, attracted a large number of tourists from different parts of the country and globe. The Collector underlined the need for sensitising the masses to the importance of protecting monuments and historical heritage sites for the benefit of future generations.

He also highlighted the steps being taken by the Central and State governments in protecting the important sites. P. Perumal, Conservator and Senior Librarian, Saraswati Mahal Library, Thanjavur, spoke on the importance of proper upkeep of the heritage sites.

He said people should desist from causing any damage to the walls of ancient buildings or monuments. R. Dhandapani, district tourism officer, K. Rajeswari, Principal of the college and S. Seyalapathy, Head of Tamil Department spoke.
