Consumer products manufactured by women prisoners lodged in the Special Prison for Women here is all set to be marketed to public directly outside the jail premises now.
A prison bazaar is coming up at the entrance of the Special Prison for Women (SPW) to sell variety of products manufactured by the inmates. It would most likely be managed by male convicts of Tiruchi Central Prison and jail staff.
A host of products made by the women convicts were currently being sent to other prisons across the State and to the prison bazaar established at the entrance of the Tiruchi Central Prison accommodating male prisoners.
The SPW accommodates around 160 women prisoners including 72 convicts serving lengthy terms.
A set of women convicts were engaged in a myriad of vocational activities such as manufacture of pickles, cookies, puffs, sanitary napkins and night dresses inside the SPW situated near the Gandhi Market area.
Raw materials required for the manufacture of products were being arranged by the Prisons Department. Women inmates would be given wages for the works they undertake, say prison officials.
Cookies and pickles were being sent to Central Prisons at Puzhal near Chennai, Coimbatore, Palayamkottai, Salem and Cuddalore besides to Borstal School at Pudukottai. Bakery items such as puffs and buns were sent for sale at prison bazaar in Tiruchi Central Prison while night dresses were being sent to the prison bazaars at Puzhal and to the Prison Department’s Chief Office in Chennai for sale.
The prison bazaar at Tiruchi Central Prison was opened in February to market slew of products made by the male convicts.
