Members of the National Federation of Postal Employees resorted to strike on Thursday.

They demanded, among other things, withdrawal of the target fixed by the department for implementing various savings schemes such as Recurring Deposit, Savings Bank and Rural Postal Life Insurance, recruitment of adequate staff, filling up of vacant posts.

J. Jankiraman, president of the NFPE, Postal, RMS and GDS Associations coordination committee, in a note, said postal employees were being harassed through targets.

Postal officials said they had to manage the services with the employees who were not participating in the strike.

There was a long queue at the Head Post Office particularly at the Speed Post, registration and money order counters.

Some delay

“Although there was some delay, regular service was maintained,” said an official.

About 50 per cent of employees turned up for duty at the post offices in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Perambalur and Karur.

A majority of the employees went on strike in the Nagapattinam district, sources said.
