Devotees in large numbers offered worship at the Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple near here and offered flowers to the deity on the occasion of 'Poochorithal' festival on Sunday.

The 'Poochorithal' festival is one of the important events with pilgrims from Tiruchi and other places thronging the shrine to offer flowers to the deity.

Starting from the last Sunday of the Tamil month of Maasi, the Poochorithal festival is spread over the next three Sundays wherein devotees would offer flowers to the deity which would be distributed to the pilgrims.

The festival marks the commencement of the holy fast ('Pachai pattini viratham') by Sri Mariamman for 28 days during which Sri Amman would be offered ‘Thullu Maavu, tender coconut, buttermilk and sugarcane juice as ‘naivedhyam’.

A heavy posse of police personnel was deployed at Samayapuram in connection with the festival.
