Perambalur town has been brought under a network of surveillance cameras.

A centralised monitoring system with a video wall to monitor the Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs) at a control room was inaugurated on Wednesday by V.Varadharaju, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, in the presence of K.Nandakumar, Collector, and Sonal Chandra, Superintendent of Police, Perambalur.

At present 28 cameras have been installed at 13 important places such as the old and new bus stands, Kamarajar Arch, Palakkarai, Sangupettai, Government Hospital, Four-Road Junction, Uzhavar Sandhai and Roever Arch in the town. The project has been taken up under the Road Safety Fund. Public address systems have been installed at all important junctions.

The cameras would be monitored from the control room. The installation of the cameras would help police prevent and detect crime and regulate traffic, officials said.

In the second phase of the project, which has commenced, 33 more cameras would be installed at 21 locations in the district including Thirumanthurai Tollgate, Vijayagopalapuram, Siruvachur Junction, Collector’s Office Arch, Valikandapuram, V.Kalathur Kaikatti, Chettikulam bus stand and Thuraimangalam.

In an interaction with reporters, Mr.Varadharaju said priority would be accorded to checking accidents especially on highways.
