Marking the commencement of the ‘Holy Week’ hundreds of Christians participated in a Palm Sunday procession here on Sunday. They marched down from St. Mary’s Cathedral in Melapudur to St. John’s Vestry Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School.

Christians celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

Holy Week

For many churches, Palm Sunday, often referred to as ‘Passion Sunday,’ marks the beginning of Holy Week which concludes on Easter Sunday.

According to the Bible, when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowd greeted Him by waving olive branches and by covering the path en route with olive and palm branches. To mark this event, Palm Sunday assumes the significance of distribution of palm leaves often tied to Cross to the worshippers in churches.

Rev. Fr. Antony Devotta, Bishop of Tiruchi Diocese, Rt. Rev. G. Paul Vasanthakumar, Bishop of Tiruchi Thanjavur Church of South India and Rev. Edwin Jayakumar, Bishop of Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church, after initial prayers, inaugurated the procession.
