Up the ladder: The winners in the fourth category at the ‘Spell Bee’ contest held in Tiruchi on Sunday.

Over 1,000 students from 29 schools in Tiruchi, Madurai, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts participated in a two-day English language skills event organised by Wiz National Spell Bee at Samadh Senior Secondary School, Khaja Nagar, over the weekend.

Around 1,600 students (from Class I to XII) were vetted from earlier qualifying tests in oral and written English conducted at the school and inter-school level.

All contestants were given preparatory booklets that had questions framed by a panel of academicians and teachers from across the country.

Prithika, (Class I, Orchard School, Tiruchi), and Avantika Prasad, (Class X, Sowma Public School, Manapparai), were noteworthy performers as they spelled all the 100 given words correctly.

State-level written competition winners will further participate in a ‘State Grand Finale’ to be held in August in Coimbatore.

Prizes given

Abdul Nazeer, organiser of the programme, distributed cash prizes, medals and certificates to the toppers of each of the five categories.
