Vital organs of a 33-year-old man were harvested at the Cethar Hospitals here on Thursday so as to give a new lease of life to six people.
Marimuthu, son of Ganesan of Ulaganathapuram, who met with an accident on July 24 at Mannarpuram, was admitted to a private hospital and then to government hospital with head injury.
Since his condition was stated to be serious, he was shifted to Cethar Hospitals for upscale treatment.
Brain stem injury
A CT scan revealed severe brain stem injury for which he was treated by neuro physicians and surgeon.
However, the patient became critical and was declared brain dead on Wednesday night.
When the importance of organ donation was explained to his father Ganesan and family members, they expressed their willingness to donate the organs to the needy recipients.
Upon approval, the vital organs of the patient – heart, liver, kidneys and eyes – were retrieved by a group of transplant and retrieval team.
While the liver was used for a patient with end stage liver disease, who required a cadaveric transplant at the hospital, the heart was harvested and airlifted for a patient at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai.
Green corridor
The heart was transported in 8 minutes through Green Corridor Traffic from Thillai Nagar to the Tiruchi airport on Thursday.
The city police escorted the transit and provided traffic free movement which ensured that the heart reached the airport in a short time to be transported to Chennai.
The kidneys were sent to Frontline Hospital, Tiruchi, and KG Hospital, Coimbatore. Both the eyes were taken to AG Hospital, Tiruchi.
