A woman passenger died and 57 others were injured in a road accident involving a State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) bus and an Omni bus on the Tiruchi – Chennai national highway at Palur in the early hours of Monday. The deceased identified as P. Rajapushpam (45) from Chennai was on the SETC bus.

Police sources said the SETC bus was proceeding to Chennai from Tuticorin when the vehicle suddenly went over the centre median near a ‘U’ turn and landed on the other carriageway.

This led to a head-on collision between the SETC bus and the Tiruchendur-bound Omni bus from Chennai that was proceeding in the right carriageway. The drivers of both the buses were among those injured.

Both buses were completely damaged in the early morning accident that occurred at around 1.30 a.m.

The injured were rushed to the government hospital in Tiruchi. Kollidam police have registered a case. SETC bus driver T. Alaguraj (28) has been named as the accused.
