About 25 members of the farmers wing of Tamil Maanila Congress were taken into custody when they resorted to a novel agitation by squatting on Uyyakondan canal on Saturday condemning Karnataka’s failure to release Tamil Nadu’s due share of water in the Cauvery river.

The agitators, led by Puliyur A. Nagarajan, president of the wing, resorted to the ‘kudiyerum porattam,’ by erecting a thatched structure on the dry canal bed. Mr.Nagarajan also demanded that adequate water be released in the 17 irrigation canals downstream of Mettur reservoir to save banana crop.
