Nominations invited for award

The district administration has invited nominations for the Uthamar Gandhi Awards given to best performing panchayats by the State government.

Fifteen panchayats are selected each year for the award. Panchayats excelling in implementing development programmes, financial management/revenue generation and innovative initiatives are given the awards, Collector T.Soundiah said in a press release. The award carries a certificate, shield and a cash reward of Rs.5 lakh. The presidents of the selected panchayats are also given certificates and medals.

Nominations or proposals for the awards for 2009-10 could be sent to the Collector by the respective panchayat presidents along with a report on their activities during the five year period between 2004-05 and 2008-09 on or before June 15. Additional details, if required, would be sought from the panchayats concerned. A committee headed by the Collector would scrutinise the proposals and make its recommendations to the government, Mr. Soundiah said.
