Kumud N. Srinivasan, Chairperson of National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi, said she would focus on broader industry-academic collaboration to produce shining technocrats.

Ms. Srinivasan, who is the first woman chairperson of NIT-T, told presspersons on Thursday that she had more than 30 years of experience in various fields, including Information Technology, in the U.S.

She would try to make use of experience and expertise to bring a positive and qualitative change in overall teaching environment in the NIT. There would not be major changes in the system. She would use her experience to accelerate and strengthen the ongoing programmes.

The NIT-T had embarked on a mission to accelerate applied research, industry-academic collaboration, and so on. It would be fine tuned in accordance with the present day requirements.

While emphasising the need for concentrating more on research and development, Ms. Srinivasan, who is the president of Intel India, said more than 70 per cent of employees in Intel had been with research and development. The same formula could be replicated in postgraduate level programmes. There was a need for robust and serious postgraduate programmes to pursue quality research. If needed, Intel would work with NIT-T as part of industry-academic institute collaboration.

Terming her appointment as chairperson of NIT-T as a pleasant surprise, she said she was looking forward to leverage her experience to take the institute to the next level. She was impressed with the facilities and infrastructure available on the campus.

S. Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T, said the institute had taken a number of steps to take forward the agenda of popularising industry-institute collaboration. Her appointment would be helpful to the institute to establish meaningful collaboration with leading industries.
