The National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi plans to transform its premises into a smart campus similar to smart classrooms and smart city initiatives.

It is aimed at introducing student and faculty friendly measures on all aspects of academic and non-academic functions of the institute.

Speaking to reporters for the first time after assuming office as Director of NIT, Mini Shaji Thomas said that the smart campus plan would have seven components including e-governance, energy production and storage, intelligence transportation system, green campus and smart buildings.

As per the e-governance component, there would be 100 per cent paperless communications.

Though most of the communications of NIT with other stakeholders including Ministry of Human Resources and Development had been based on ICT services, all-out efforts would be made to enforce paperless communications on remaining areas except on mandatory requirements.

With regard to self-reliance on energy, Ms. Thomas said that it had been planned to install 2 MW solar power plant on the campus. It would ensure tapping of natural energy.

It was aimed at meeting the energy requirement of the entire campus. There should be no need to buy power from outside sources.

She said there was a need to introduce intelligence transport system within the campus so as to enable the students and others to commute from one department to another or one block to another block.

The institute had already bought five battery operated cars. The smart campus initiative would address many issues on internal transportation.

Ms. Thomas added that the green cover of the sprawling campus would have to be increased.

A plan would be devised to plant more trees on the campus. Moreover, it should add beauty to the campus. Similarly, steps would be taken to increase energy efficient buildings.

She said that a proposal on smart campus initiative would shortly be sent to the Ministry of Human Resources and Development.

Stating that the NIT-T had been one of the most sought institutes by the JEE aspirants, she said that it continued to achieve good placement record continuously. Several new academic initiatives would be taken to improve its ranking.

On filling up of vacancies and regularisation of temporary staff members of NIT-T, Ms. Thomas said that the MHRD had set up a committed headed by Ahoke De, Director, NIT-Patna, to study the issues related to recruitment and regularisation. It was expected to submit its report in April.

Steps would be taken to fill vacancies based on its recommendations.
