Work on construction of police station at Vettaikaraniruppu in the coastal block of Thalaignayiru in the district has been completed and will be inaugurated soon.

The station, which is presently housed in a private rented building on the Velankanni - Vedaranyam highway, lacks adequate space. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation took up the work about a year ago.

The work has been completed in a record time, although some special efforts had to be made for purchasing water for the construction.

“The entire Thalaignayiru panchayat union is on par with sea-level and hence the entry of sea waters into the union has been a regular phenomenon all through the year. The problem worsens during high tides,” an official source told The Hindu on Monday.

The steady flow of brackish water into the union has its adverse impact on the groundwater table, forcing the Corporation to purchase water.

The plinth area of the station is 2,340 square feet and has been built at an expenditure of ₹ 47.25 lakh. The ground floor has lock-up cell, chambers for the police personnel, while the first floor comprises record room and other facilities.

The station was newly started in 2013 and does not have even a landline telephone facility and was housed in a private building without adequate space.
