The two-day national seminar on ‘resolving power crisis through solar energy’ organised by the Innovation Incubator (i2) of Nehru Memorial College (NMC), Puthanampatti near here, commenced on Monday.
The event was sponsored by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, Syndicate Bank and Public Action.
P.Annadurai, Chief Engineer, Tangedco, Tiruchi, said that the State government has already announced a State Solar Policy which envisages power cut-free State by 2014.
He reminded about government subsidy of Rs.2 per unit for solar users.
A. Prabaharan, Dean and Director of Innovation Incubator (i2), said that simple and cost-effective technologies are the need of the hour in a country like ours. NMC would create a solar park on about 20 acres, Mr. Prabaharan said.
M. Ponnambalam, chairman of the college, urged the farmers to embrace solar energy to overcome loss and energy crisis.
He urged the State government to provide better subsidy to solar users.
Pon.Balasubramanian, president of the college, said that the college would adopt solar energy fully in the near future .
Through this, the college would save about Rs.75 lakh a year which it spends on buying diesel.
S.Vigneswaran, secretary, Shivani Educational Group, said that institutions of his group have been using solar energy for the past one year.
N.Hariharan, deputy manager, Syndicate Bank, promised to enhance bank funding for solar projects. Periyannan, chairman, Imayam group of educational institutions, spoke.
