More urban PHCs to get own buildings

Two more Urban Primary Health Centres in the city will soon get new buildings at a cost of Rs.50 lakh each.

This is part of the ongoing plan to give a fillip to the Urban PHCs under National Urban Health Mission (NUHM).

M. Geetharani, City Health Officer, told The Hindu on the sidelines of inauguration of new building of the upgraded Urban Primary Health Centre at Edamalaipatti Pudur that the construction of new buildings had already begun at Ramalinga Nagar and Gandhi Puram, where the upgraded UPHCs were functioning.

All facilities, including laboratory, scan, electro cardiogram, labour room and pharmacies would be also be upgraded.

She said that the city had 18 dispensaries. All of them had been upgraded as Urban Primary Health Centres recently under the NUHM. Of them, nine had all facilities to provide 24-hour care to patients.

The Corporation had started a facelift plan to upgrade the basic facilities in seven centres. Of them, three would get new buildings at a cost of about Rs.50 lakh each. A sum of Rs.10 lakh has been sanctioned for renovation of the remaining four centres.

Dr. Geetharani said that the renovation of PHC at Kamaraj Nagar and Beerangikulam had already been completed. The renovation of PHCs at Thiruvanaikoil and Melakalkandarkottai has been taken up. They would be completed as quickly as possible.

Earlier, Mayor A. Jaya declared open the new building constructed for U-PHC at Edamalaipatti Pudur. Deputy Mayor J. Srinivasan, Commissioner N.S. Prema, City Engineer S. Nagesh and others participated.
