The Medical Council of India (MCI) has permitted K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College to offer 17 more Post Graduate seats from 2017-18.

Ever since the college was established in 1997, it has never got permission to increase PG seats in double digit at a single stroke. The nod was given based on a proposal sent last month. The college had listed out the available infrastructure for offering the courses.

Marry Lilly, Dean, KAP. Viswanatham Government Medical College, said that the number of seats in Master of Surgery would go up to 16 from four. The college had got permission to offer five more seats in Doctor of Medicine in Paediatrics (MD Paediatrics). It had so far been offering four seats in MD Paediatrics.

The college offers 22 PG courses during the academic year 2016-17. It included four seats each in Doctor of Science, Doctor of Medicine in Paediatrics, Doctor of Medicine in Anaesthesia. With the increase in new PG seats, the total number of PG seats would go up to 39.

Commenting on the development, C. Vijaya Baskar, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, told “The Hindu” that the sincere attempts of the State government had enabled the college to increase PG seats. It would augur well for PG aspirants. The government had planned to increase the PG seats further, he added.
