The metallurgical and materials engineering department of National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi (NIT-T) brought in highest research funding of Rs. 3 crore during 2012-13. NIT-T Director S. Sundarrajan disclosed this during the Institute Day celebrations on Tuesday.
Out of the funding, the department works on a project worth Rs. 2.5 crore from the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Students of the department have received the prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) fellowship.
Rs. 2.5-cr. grant
A total grant of Rs. 2.5 crore has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to the civil engineering department for establishing a centre of excellence in transportation engineering.
The department was working on a new research project worth Rs. 19.25 lakh from Neyveli Lignite Corporation, and a project worth Rs. 15.94 lakh from SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board).
The department has been assured a funding of Rs. 4.2 crore by the Coir Board of India for a new research project.
The department of production engineering was also currently working on research projects worth Rs. 2.5 crore. It has provided consultancy worth Rs. 22 lakh to various organisations, including BHEL, a report presented by the Dean–Academic, P. Asokan, said.
The department of electronics and communication engineering has secured two projects grant worth Rs. 28 lakh each from UKIERI (UK-India Education Research Initiative) and Rs. 1.55 crore from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Departments of chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical and electronics engineering, and mechanical engineering have also attracted substantial research funding worth several lakhs of rupees.
