Marathons attract participation of 1,750 persons

More than 1,750 persons participated in the Perambalur and Ariyalur Marathons organised by the district units of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The marathon here was inaugurated by Collector M. Vijayakumar from the Collectorate premises in the presence of S. Natarajan, District Revenue Officer.

About 1,000 persons participated in the marathon. “The marathon saw enthusiastic participation of youth from rural parts of the district which was an encouraging sign,” said C. Punniyamoorthy, District Sports Officer. Mr. Vijayakumar gave away the prizes.

The winners:

Men (21km): 1. M. Rajasekar (Thungapuram), 2. M. Venkatesan (Arumbavoor), 3. D. Maheswaran (Elambalur).

Women (10km): 1. P. Sathya (Saradha College), 2. K. Santhi (GHSS, Arumbavoor), 3. B. Kasthuri (Saradha College).

Boys (10km): 1. M. Karunanidhi (GHSS, Nakkasalem), 2. M. Chandrasekar (GHSS, Arumbavoor), 3. R. Prakash (Thanthai Roever HSS).

Girls (5km): 1. V. Abhinaya (Sri Raghavendra MHSS, Arumbavur), 2. S. Sundari (GHSS, Siruvachur), 3. D. Surya (GHSS, Kurumbalur).

Ariyalur

The marathon was flagged off from the District Stadium by Collector T.K. Ponnusamy. The event attracted close to 750 participants.

For men, the marathon was for 15 km, while for boys it was for 10 km. Women and girls had to cover a distance of five km.

P. Ramalingam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Prohibition and Enforcement Wing), gave away prizes in the presence of S. Tamilselvan, District Sports Officer.

The winners:

Men: 1. C. Sivanandam (Keezhapalur), 2. G. Nagarajan (Devamangalam), 3. D. Kannan (Thirumalapadi Pudukottai).

Boys: 1. M. Kalaivanan (Thamaraipoondi), 2. S. Prakash (GHSS, Jeyamkondam), 3. Raman (GHSS, Keezhapalur).

Women & Girls: 1. K. Malathi (Panchayat Union Middle School, Thelur), 2. R. Selvarani (GHSS, Ponparappi), 3. M. Jayalakshmi (GHSS, Kamarasavalli).
