Man, son, grandson arrested for murder

More than a year after a 50-year-old woman was murdered at her house at Edamalaipattipudur here , a special police team has cracked the case by arresting a 68-year-old man, his son, and grandson on Wednesday.

The team has also recovered the 10 sovereign gold chain stolen from her by the trio: Congress Marudhai (68), his son Murugesan (45), and grandson M. Parthiban (21).

The victim, S.Valarmathi, was murdered in the late hours of December 11, 2013 at her house at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and besides the gold thali, an ear-stud weighing 12 sovereigns was looted from her. The E.Pudur police registered a murder for gain case on a complaint from the victim’s husband R.Sornam (62), and a special team was constituted by Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav to probe the case.

Based on information, the team interrogated Murugesan of Musiri who confessed to have committed the crime along with his father and son, a police press release said.

Congress Marudhai, who was a fortune teller, came to E.Pudur area and kept a watch on Valarmathi’s house. On learning that Valarmathi normally stayed alone, the man hatched a plot along with his son and grandson. The trio came to E. Pudur area, and under the guise of seeking alms, Murugesan and Congress Marudhai entered Valarmathi’s house.

Parthiban was asked to wait near the rear side of the house to keep a watch. Upon entering the house, Murugesan and Congress Marudhai tried to rob the ‘thali’ from the woman.

As she raised an alarm, the accused pushed her on a cot and smothered her face with a blanket and murdered her. The accused were remanded in judicial custody, the release added.
