In a murder-for-gain case, a 50-year-old woman was killed by a man who pushed her into a canal before taking away her gold beads near K.Sathanurhere on Sunday. The body of the victim, P.Balamani of Manalmettupatti, was fished out of the canal on Monday evening. The police have arrested Maruthupandi of Ichikamapatti on the charge of killing the woman by pushing her into the water body and taking away the gold beads attached to her “thaali”. Police sources said Balamani went to rear goats on Sunday morning and did not return home. Unable to trace her, the locals filed a complaint with K.K.Nagar police on Sunday night.

The police personnel, who went to the spot on Monday, recovered a “thaali” thread, footwear, and a small cloth bag of the victim. The police also found a motorcycle key near the spot and conducted inquiries with the locals. On the basis of inputs from the locals, the police zeroed in on Maruthupandi and found that the key belonged to a motorcycle owned by him. During investigation, Maruthupandi confessed that he had snatched the gold beads from the “thaali” of the victim before allegedly pushing her into the canal.

A thorough search was conducted to recover the body in the canal with the help of fire fighters on Monday and the body was finally fished out in the evening. The stolen gold beads were also recovered. The K.K. Nagar crime police are investigating.
