The Mahila Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a painter to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment for committing aggravated sexual assault on a minor girl here in May last year. The II Additional District Judge, A.K.A. Rahman, holding full additional charge of the Mahila Court, imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on K. Ulaganathan, a painter from the city.
This is the first conviction in a sexual assault case booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, in Tiruchi district, according to the prosecution. Ulaganathan had committed the grave offence on the minor girl in the latter’s house when she was alone. On a complaint from the victim’s mother, Fort All Women Police booked a case under various IPC sections, including 342 (wrongful confinement) 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) and 376 (rape) besides Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The judge sentenced Ulaganathan to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He recommended to the State government to provide Rs. 1 lakh as compensation to the victim.
