Work on the golden car of Sri Vekkaliamman temple at Woraiyur here is nearing completion and the maiden run of the temple car will be held on February 18.
The car, 9.75 feet in height, has been made using 10.5 kg of gold and 25 kg of silver.
Apart from utilising seven kg of gold belonging to the temple, the authorities purchased 3.5 kg of the metal at the Samayapuram Sri Mariamman temple for making the golden car, according to the Executive Officer, S. Krishnan.
The scheme, which was sanctioned a couple of years ago, comprised converting the gold into ribbons.
Golden foils
The golden foils were being fixed on the 303 racks and the work was nearing completion, he said. The total value of the golden car was about Rs. 3 crore, he said.
On the streets
The maiden run will be held between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on February 18 when the temple car carrying the processional idol of Sri Vekkaliamman will be drawn on the streets around the temple.
Thereafter, the devotees can pull the temple car at the inner ‘prakaram’ of the temple on payment of Rs.1,200, he said.
The Ministers, K.R. Periyakaruppan; N. Selvaraj and K.N. Nehru will participate in the function.
