Vocational training of inmates of Tiruchi Central Prison has concluded successfully for the first batch of life convicts.
Twenty-six life convicts who underwent three-months training in welding in the prison were given completion certificates on Friday.
The latest activity of imparting welding training to lifers serving lengthy terms in the prison is a joint initiative of the Prison Department, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, Confederation of Indian Industry and TREAT (Tiruchi Engineering and Technology Cluster).
The public sector giant BHEL has earmarked Rs. 44 lakh for this novel initiative under its corporate social responsibility activity. The aim is to train 200 convicts in a span of two years.
TREAT has been vested with the responsibility to organise requisite training by engaging highly skilled resource persons to train those serving life term in this latest vocational activity as a rehabilitation measure.
