Libraries are where a sound foundation is laid for a good society. And librarians have a vital role to play in the knowledge era, Collector T. Soundiah said, inaugurating a training programme for librarians from the central districts here on Sunday.

Librarians can herald transformation of the society by fulfilling their responsibility through providing the right guidance to readers. For this, they need to keep themselves updated on latest developments, the Collector said at the programme that was organised by the School Education department, Department of Public Libraries, and Rajaram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.

Mr. Soundiah informed that 80 per cent of the panchayats in the State have been provided with a library each with about 250 books under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. The practice of visiting libraries was being cultivated among young students by making library hour compulsory in schools, he said.

Tamil scholar and orator S. Sathyaseelan spoke of how knowledge disseminated through libraries can expedite progress of the country. District Library Officer A.P. Sivakumar, the president of Readers' Circle of District Central Library P.V. Devaraj, and the Field Officer of Rajaram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, offered felicitations.
