With the ‘kudimaramathu’ scheme progressing well, the district has enormous scope to improve its groundwater table in future as water bodies have been cleaned up, said Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju here on Saturday.

Inspecting the Madakulam tank, he said that the dry tank, which was filled with debris and bushes, has been cleaned up and the bund strengthened, at a cost of ₹10 lakh.

The PWD engineers have planned to pump in water into the Madakulam tank by constructing a check-dam across the Vaigai at Kodimangalam. A proposal to the tune of ₹22 crore has been submitted to the Chief Minister for approval.

If the proposal gets the nod, then surrounding pockets like TVS Nagar, Ponmeni, SS Colony, Achampathu, Palanganatham etc, would have sufficient water.

Moreover, Keezhamathur and Thuvariman tanks too would get water due to this project. When asked about the steps being taken to meet the water shortage within the city limits, Mr. Raju said that check dams across the Vaigai at four points - Arapalayam, Pechiamman Padithurai, Kuruvikaran Salai and near Mariamman Teppakulam would be constructed at a cost of ₹40 crore. With this around 50,000 filter points and wells would get recharged

Smart cards

On smart cards, Mr. Raju said only 40% of smart cards have been issued to ration card holders in the district so far. He told reporters that 90% of the card holders in the district have registered their names and they would be given the smart cards through the ration shops.

In the event of any grievances, consumers can dial 1967 and their issues would be redressed by the officials.
