The new integrated passenger terminal building to be constructed at Tiruchi international airport will be six times the size of the existing building.
The new apron as part of the mega project would have 10 bays to accommodate even wide-bodied aircrafts with associated link taxiways and vehicular lane.
The multi-level car park proposed at the new building would be designed for 750 cars.
The new terminal building and other works would be carried out taking into account environmental concerns, said Mr. Sanjeev Jindal, General Manager (Engineering), Airports Authority of India, New Delhi.
There would be a new four lane approach road to the new terminal building as per the master plan.
The salient features of the terminal building include in-line baggage handling system with inclined carousels for baggage claim; additional basement to accommodate baggage make-up, baggage breakdown area and other services; electric substation, AC plant room, a generator yard and provision of illuminated and information signage inside the terminal.
The new building would hugely reduce congestion, Mr. Jindal said.
The existing terminal building and the facilities associated with it would continue to be used even after the commissioning of the new terminal building, said Ms. Charul Shukla, Joint General Manager (Architecture), AAI, New Delhi.
“We will promote local art and artists by giving them necessary space inside the new terminal building for publicity and sale of their products”, Mr. Sanjeev Jindal said. As part of conserving energy, the AAI would install LED lights besides making provision for recycle of waste water for horticulture use and flushing of tanks, he said.
Airport Director K. Gunasekaran said the creation of new facilities would turn Tiruchi into one of the best international airports in the southern region. Mr. Gunasekaran said the Project Management Consultancy team would make few more visits to Tiruchi to giving a final shape to the project.
