Tamil Nadu PWD Senior Engineers Association comprising retired engineers of Public Works Department has called upon the State government, Members of Parliament, and Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu to mount sustained pressure on the Centre to notify the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
This should be done, considering the critical situation faced by farmers in the delta, the association said after a consultative meeting with representatives of farmers associations to discuss the Cauvery dispute here on Thursday.
The meeting also called upon political parties of the State to project a united voice and act in unison on the Cauvery issue. Article 365 can be invoked if a State failed to comply with or to give effect to directions from the Union. Karnataka has been refusing to implement the directions of Constitutional bodies such as the Supreme Court and Tribunal. In such a situation, it could be held that the government of the State could not be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the association contended.
“The Centre should issue a notice to Karnataka government asking it to implement the final award of the Tribunal. If Karnataka refuses to comply, the State Assembly should be placed under suspended animation during which time the Tribunal award should be executed,” said A.Veerappan, State secretary, TN PWD Senior Engineers Association.
