Skilled manpower is an important component of human resource development.

The Government Polytechnic College at Sethurapatti on Tiruchi-Madurai Highway is playing a crucial role in imparting skills in various trades to rural students.

After functioning from Government Polytechnic College at Thuvakudi near Tiruchi for one year, it has now moved to its new building and has been functioning from there since July 16. Located on five acres of land, the college has a main building which houses classrooms, laboratories, library, auditorium, gymnasium, and hostels.

At present, there are 350 second year students and 255 first year students in the college. The college offers diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, (ECE), and Computer Engineering.

“There is a high demand for skilled manpower. We hope that we will get good placements in companies such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, (BHEL), Ordnance factory, Railway workshop at Golden Rock and also from private companies for our students when they complete their courses,” said S. Muruganadhan, principal of the college.

S. Bhargavi, a student from Inamkulathur doing second year diploma in EEE says: “My parents are daily wage workers.

After completing plus two, I was in a dilemma whether to continue higher studies, as higher education is expensive. At that time, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced the setting up of the college. As the college is in Srirangam constituency and as expenses will be less, I decided to join this college. I was in hostel when the college functioned at Thuvakudi, but after its shifting to Sethurapatti, which is closer to my residence, I have become a day scholar.”
