The Seshasayee Institute of Technology here is providing skill training to youth under its community college scheme.
Selected by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to provide the vocational training under National Vocational Educational Qualification Frame Work (NVEQF) of Community College scheme of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, the institute has the mandate to train 600 youth in three years in two trades - CNC Programming and Machining and Refregiration and Air Conditioning.
According to S.Sangappillai, Principal, 60 youth have been trained in 2014. As this is a vocational training, the youth are trained in evenings and holidays.
They have to be given training for 1000 hours. Any youth who has completed plus two or diploma or degree and those who are studying can join in the training. Government of India has introduced this to formally integrate vocational education together with its current conventional education stream.
“The scheme is not known to many of the youth. Government is giving this training free of cost. So youth can avail this opportunity” said Mr.Sangappillai.
Community college scheme is an educational institution that provides technical and vocational education and training for the rural population in the locality and a non-formal skill training concept that is entirely different from the conventional education.
It attracts non-formal skill training beneficiaries according to the local demand and from all cross sections of the society. AICTE approved polytechnics are considered to be viable vehicle for providing such non-formal education to a majority who live in rural areas and slum, less educated and who tend to work in low paid unorganised sector.
