Four persons were killed and seven others injured when a car hit the median at Kullampatty Pirivu on National Highway-7 near Karur on Tuesday morning.

On information by the passersby, the police and ambulance service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons, most of them in critical condition. The police gave the names of the dead as Sornaraj (40), his brother Sornapandian (45), his wife Balasaraswathi (44), and Devi (19).

While Balasaraswathi died in a private hospital, the others died on the way to the hospital.

The injured, Nainar Gunasekaran, Selva Glori, Sornavel, Selvakumar, Anburani, Saravakumar, and car driver John (32), have been admitted to the government and private hospitals in Coimbatore, Madurai, and Karur.

They were on the way to Tuticorin from Bangalore for attending a marriage. Sornapandian and Sornaraj were running a departmental store in Bangalore, along with their brother Nainar Gunasekaran.

Police said that the exact reason for the accident was yet to be ascertained.

However, they said it could have occurred because of the negligence of driver, who is said to have driven the car at a high speed. The Vellianai police have registered a case and are investigating.
