The members of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a demonstration in front of the collectorate here to highlight their 12-point charter of demand on Thursday.
The demands included fixing Rs. 10,000 as minimum wage per month for daily wage labourers, removal of irregularities in labour welfare boards, ending contract method of employment, protecting labour union rights, enforcement of labour welfare laws strictly and granting of a monthly pension of Rs. 2,000 to unorganised sector workers.
They also demanded the government to hike the compensation provided to workers who suffered natural deaths, killed in accidents, and marriage assistance and educational assistance for the wards of the workers. The government should instruct the Unorganised Sector Workers Welfare Board to accept the applications of the workers presented by the trade unions and enrol them as members, doing away with the procedure of demanding VAO certificate and bank passbook from the workers at the time of enrolment, and disbursing all pending assistance requests. R. Sampath, district president of the CITU, presided over the agitation. R. Raja, State secretary, K. C. Pandian, district vice president, S. Rangarajan, district treasurer, and others spoke. Earlier, the union took out a rally from the Vestry School Junction.
