The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed to construct five-foot overbridges (FOB) between Vallam in Thanjavur district and Ariyamangalam Palpannai near Tiruchi for safe pedestrian movement on Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway.

According to official sources, the design for construction of an FOB at Vallam, close to SASTRA University, has already been approved.

In the wake of numerous fatal accidents in recent years, the NHAI has been examining ways to address the problem. The main demand of the travelling public has been the laying of service lanes along the vulnerable Palpannai-Thuvakkudi stretch.

Pedestrian crossings on the road are quite frequent in places such as Thuvakudi, Tiruverumbur, Kattur, and Ariyamangalam. The foot over bridges have been planned at locations where there are a number of educational institutions to facilitate safe movement of students, the sources said.
