Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to the CPI and the CPI (M) staged a demonstration in front of the head post office here on Saturday urging the Central government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and Water Regulation Committees immediately.
They demanded that the Centre must make sure that Tamil Nadu gets its due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka as per the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal.
S.Gunasekaran, MLA and State president, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to the CPI, and K.Mohammed Ali, vice-president of the sangam affiliated to the CPI (M), who led the agitation, said that seven years had passed since the tribunal gave its final award.
They accused the Narendra Modi government of following the policies of the previous Congress government on many issues.
They also demanded payment of Rs. 2,000 per quintal for paddy. At present the price is Rs.1,400 per quintal for fine variety and Rs. 1,360 for common variety.
S.Ramanathan, president, Sugarcane Producers Association, Sami Nadarajan, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to the CPI (M), participated.
NAGAPATTINAM: Cadres of the farmers’ body staged a demonstration in front of the HPO in support of their demands.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres also protested against Karnataka’s proposed dam at Mekedatu across the river Cauvery.
