Cadre of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged demonstrations in various places in the city, and elsewhere in the district in support of their charter of demands on Tuesday.
The demonstrations were organised in accordance with a resolution adopted at the 20 district conference of the CPI(M) held at Thathiengarpet on January 2 and 3.
The party urged the Centre to allocate funds to upgrade the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Headquarters Hospital in Tiruchi on a par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
It urged the State government to expedite the Information Technology Park works in Tiruchi to create job opportunities for the educated unemployed youth. It also wanted the State government to devise schemes to start agro-based industries in the district.
Claiming that illegal sand mining in the Cauvery and Coleroon river beds went unchecked, the party urged the State government to initiate stern action on this issue. As Tiruchi was in the central part of the State, steps should be taken to establish an integrated bus stand keeping in the mind the number of buses arriving and departing from the city. Competitive prices for agricultural produces, uninterrupted supply of fertilizers and opening of additional procurement centres in the district were among their other demands.
The demonstrations were held at Srirangam, Edamalaipattipudur, Keerakollai, and Airport in the city besides places including Tiruverumbur, Kallakudi, Uppiliapuram, Musiri, Thottiyam, Manapparai, and Thathiengarpet.
