The elementary school teachers affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Thodakkappalli Aasiriyar Koottani staged a demonstration in front of Khadi Craft in the junction area on Wednesday to press for their 12-point charter of demands.

They demanded removal of anomalies, affecting middle school teachers, in the Sixth Pay Commission report; do away with the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), introduction of transparent counselling sessions for the transfer of teachers, introduction of breakfast scheme in schools, and providing promotion to all the eligible graduate teachers.

They demanded steps for filling up vacancies in the offices of the Tiruchi urban range District Elementary Education Officer's office and the Tiruchi West DEEO office. The school education department should come forward to regularise the services of part-time vocational teachers appointed under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and nominate them as full-time teachers and sanction them time-bound salary. The department should also come forward to provide time-bound salary to teachers appointed on consolidated salary in 2003.

M.James, president of the urban district unit, led the demonstration and N.Rengarajan, general secretary of the Koottani explained their demands. A.Robert Anthonyraj, district vice president, J.Albert doss, district secretary, and S.Neelakandan, urban district secretary, spoke.
