TIRUCHI: 17/03/2011: N. Anand, DMK candidate for Srirangam Assembly constituency.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has re-nominated N. Anand, who lost to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa in the 2011 election, for the Srirangam by-poll.

Mr.Anand (33), son of Nagarajan of Sandha Puram in Allidurai panchayat in Tiruchi district, was handpicked by the party to contest against Ms.Jayalalithaa when he was 29 years old. He was then the branch secretary of Sandha Puram.

Belonging to the Mutharaiyar caste, which is a dominant caste in Srirangam constituency, he is a young face of the DMK in Tiruchi district.

Mr.Anand was given a rousing reception when he arrived here on Tuesday  after visiting the DMK president M. Karunanidhi and treasurer M.K. Stalin in Chennai “I feel ecstatic over the faith reposed in me by the party high command. Chances are bright for me to make it to the Assembly this time,” he said.

Voters of Srirangam constituency, he said, were unhappy as the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had failed to implement most of the promises given to the electorate.

K.N. Nehru, former Minister and secretary, DMK’s Tiruchi district (south) said the party had once again fielded a young candidate belonging to an agricultural family. The party will launch the campaign on Wednesday.

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin would visit Srirangam on January 24 to address the party workers meeting. He would also declare open the party’s election office.

To a question, Mr. Nehru said he had extended an invitation to Mr. Karunanidhi to visit Srirangam for campaigning.
