Large numbers of failures in Mathematics and Commerce brought down the overall Plus-Two pass percentage of Tiruchi district to 88.20 this time from 90.05 last year.

The slide by 1.85 percentage points has caused disappointment to the School Education Department in the district which had hoped to attain a rise by five percentage points. As many as 1,695 students failed in Mathematics and 429 in Commerce, followed by 343 in Accountancy, 249 in Chemistry, 248 in English, 215 in Economics, 134 in Business Mathematics, 121 in History, 114 in Biology, and 104 in Physics. In Mathematics the number of failing students constituted 1035 boys and 660 girls. Hundreds of students have passed in the subject with border marks, the Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan said. A total of 3,130 students had failed in one or more subjects out of the total number of 26,528 candidates (11,367 boys and 15,161 girls) who appeared for the examinations. Six out of the 262 students who had to take up re-examination in Physics after the bundle of answer scripts was lost by the Postal Department had failed. They comprise four students of Musiri Boys' Government Higher Secondary School, and one each from the Government Higher Secondary Schools in Thandalaiputhur and Ayyampalayam.

Out of the 178 higher secondary schools, 14 succeeded in obtaining cent per cent results. Among the schools with cent per cent results, the St. Joseph's Anglo Indian Girls' Higher Secondary School had the highest number of 206 students appearing for the examination. Among the 53 Government higher secondary schools, the best performance of 99.72 per cent overall pass was registered by the Government Girls' Government Higher Secondary School, Mannachanallur. Only one out of the 354 students failed in the examination. Out of the five Adi Dravida Welfare schools, the one in Thiruvasi is the best with 94.64 per cent overall pass. Of the 112 students, 106 have secured pass marks.

Ten schools have very narrowly missed the distinction of cent per cent pass due to failure of just one student each. They comprise (number of students appeared in bracket) Savithiri Vidhya Sala Hindu Girls' HSS (500), St. Philomenas Girls' HSS (419), Boiler Plant Girls' HSS (419), Periyar Maniammai Girls' HSS (335), Alpha Plus Matric.
