Dengue threat: health officials crack the whip on quacks

November 16, 2017 08:21 am | Updated 08:21 am IST - TIRUCHI

Responding to complaints about wrong medical treatment given by quacks for dengue, the district administration has urged the public to immediately pass on information about such practitioners to the Health Department.

The instruction was issued by Collector K. Rajamani on Wednesday, a day after a team led by Joint Director of Medical Services Shamsath Begum carried out a surprise raid, with the assistance of local police, at a residence-cum-clinic of R. Gopalakrishnan at Sangampatti in Thuraiyur limits.

Though he was not available at home, the team found equipment for checking blood pressure, medicines, syringes, and fluids. Gopalakrishnan's family members told during questioning that he had stopped treating patients two months ago after the Health Department tightened its vigil on quacks treating dengue patients.

The team also learnt that Gopalakrishnan, who holds a B.Sc degree, had been treating patients fraudulantly and that his residence was commonly referred to as ‘doctor’s house’ in the locality.

The materials were confiscated and a complaint was lodged at the Thuraiyur police station by Dr. Shamsath Begum. A First Information Report was registered and the police are on the lookout for Gopalakrishnan.

Warning that stringent action would be taken against quacks, the Collector called upon the public to convey information about such practitioners to the Joint Director of Health Services over the phone by dialling 9842482209.
