The display of list of defaulters who owe rental dues or share in agricultural produce to temples has not evoked the desired result, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas, official sources said.
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board, about three years ago, introduced the plan to display the names of the defaulters who owed large sums of money and or huge quantum of agricultural produce to temples.
Called ‘Top 10 defaulters’, the scheme has evoked some response in metro centres, such as Tiruchi, as a few defaulters have either refunded a part of the dues or consented to settle their dues in instalments.
“But some of the defaulting tenants of the lands belonging to the Sri Saptharisheeswarar Temple in Lalgudi have opted to seek settlement through Revenue Court,” said S.Manoharan, Executive Officer of the temple.
Interestingly, only a share of agricultural produce needed to be offered to the temple in most of the cases. The temple authorities in most of the rural and semi-urban areas have been awaiting the orders of the Revenue Court, he said.
