Hundred and twelve members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India (CPI) here were taken into custody after they attempted to stage a demonstration here on Saturday in protest against the visit of the US President Barack Obama to India.
They were arrested as the police had not given permission to the agitation. Earlier, in a brief address, senior CPI leader R.Nallakannu said the agitation was not against the visit of Mr.Obama to India but the policies and projects he sought to push through here. The Union government was planning to enter into various agreements with the US during his visit including in the field of defence, he said.
S.Sridhar, State Committee member, CPI (M), K.Annadurai, City Secretary and Jayaseelan, rural district secretary, CPI (M), and Indrajith, district secretary, CPI, were among those who participated.
Police said all the arrested were released in the evening.
