Corporation distributes cloth bags

October 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - TIRUCHI:

In an attempt to discourage the use of plastic carry bags, cloth bags were distributed among city residents and students at the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation office on Monday.

About 6,600 cloth bags were distributed under the initiative of the Department of Environment in association with Voice Trust, a voluntary organisation, and the corporation, according to a press release.

Mayor A. Jaya distributed the bags in the presence of M. Vijayalakshmi, corporation commissioner; J. Srinivasan, Deputy Mayor; and A. Gregory, Director, Voice Trust.

Ms. Vijayalakshmi urged the city residents to desist from using plastic carry bags and cups as the use and throw products clogged drains and caused environmental and health hazards.
