A group of construction workers – all members of Construction Workers Federation of India – were arrested here on Tuesday after they attempted to picket in support of their charter of demands.
Led by the federation's district president Natarajan, the members assembled in front of the office of the District Labour Welfare Commissioner and attempted to go ahead with their stir plan when they were held by the police. The federation is affiliated to the CITU.
They demanded that women construction workers above 50 years and male workers above 58 years be given Rs. 2,000 as pension every month. Appointment of additional staff in the construction workers welfare board and immediate disbursement of financial assistance to the legal heirs of workers who die in accidents or due to natural death were among their other demands. Those arrested were later released.
